Trace

Shaper Trace is a drawing toolkit by Shaper Tools that allows you to turn any sketch or drawing into a vector graphic by simply taking a picture. Place the Trace Frame over your sketch and convert it into a Scalable Vector Graphic (SVG) with the Trace App, ready for fabrication using the tool of your choice, from laser cutters and vinyl cutters to CNC machines like Shaper Origin and more.

I designed the user experience and the user interface for the Trace App. The goal was to create an intuitive flow which could integrate into the workflows of many different digital fabrication tools such as CNC machines, laser cutters, and vinyl cutters.

I explored many different user experience journeys, user interfaces, and interaction models while searching for the most intuitive and efficient way to get a user from sketch to vector in seconds.

Computer vision is at the core of Shaper’s digitally augmented tools. I introduced a new fiducial marker pattern that both addressed technical needs and introduced a new brand identity for Trace and future tools of a similar category.

Trace needed to be simple to understand from the moment a customer lays hands on it. For this reason, I also designed the packaging and unboxing experience including the retail box graphics and instruction booklets.
